BONJOUR

Ethiopian has put on hold negotiations with the European Consortium on acquiring the A350 and A380 Airbus.
Ethiopian, which for decades has been operating Boeing fleet in long range flights, last year started a study on a fleet diversification program. To that effect the top level management of Ethiopian was holding talks with officials of Airbus on procurement of jetliners.
Girma Wake, CEO of Ethiopian, told The Reporter that the recent report about the defects discovered in A350 and A380 aircraft during test flights compelled the airline to suspend the talks.
"The manufacturer is to redesign the aircraft. If they come up with a commendable aircraft we will resume the talk," Girma said. The airline did not suspend the study on fleet diversification program. "The fleet diversification study is progressing," Girma said.
Last month, Ethiopian leased A330 aircraft with cockpit crew from Societe de Transport Aerien Regional SA. The A330 airbus aircraft, which was manufactured in 2004, has a total seat capacity for 364 passengers.
In a related news, Ethiopian and General Electric (GE), the American aircraft engine manufacturer, on Wednesday signed an agreement for the procurement of 20 engines which will power the ten Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. The total value of the 20 engines is 330 million dollars. Girma Wake and the regional manager of GE, George D. Duncanson, signed the purchase agreement at the Ethiopian head office.
In February 2005, Ethiopian ordered ten B787 aircraft, without specifying the choice of engines. After extensive evaluation, Ethiopian decided to buy GE engines. The total cost of the 10 B787 jetliners is 1.2 billion dollars. Boeing will start to deliver the aircraft by 2008.
Mr. Duncanson said that his company has a strong partnership with Ethiopian. "Ethiopian is a very important customer. We stayed with the Ethiopian group for two years in Addis Ababa, he said.
Previously, Ethiopian used to buy engines from Pratt and Whitney (P&W), another American engine manufacturer. "Most of our engines are P&W engines. But P&W did not produce engines for B787," Girma said. All Ethiopian Boeing aircraft have P&W engines.
